The Construction Association of New Brunswick (CANB) was incorporated on March 5th, 1971 under the signatures of Pasquale Rocca of Saint John, Floyd Logan of Moncton and Frederick Beairsto of Fredericton. The three gentlemen were acting as representatives of their local, mixed-member associations.
Under the Letters of Patent, the Association's purpose was stated as:
- To foster and advance the interests of those who are engaged in, or who are directly or indirectly connected with the construction industry in the Province of New Brunswick.
- To represent its membership in any matters pertaining to the construction industry, and to enter into such agreements as may appear to be in the best interests of the construction industry.
- To promote suitable and desirable legislation affecting the industry in all its branches; and to provide liaison with governments for any contemplated legislation by municipal, provincial or federal authorities insofar as the same may affect the construction industry.
- To speak and act on behalf of its membership and represent their best interests before legislative and government bodies.
- To achieve a closer relationship and a better understanding between the various branches of the industry and to improve and bring about a greater uniformity in the customs, usages, methods, standards, and practices of those engaged in the construction industry.
- To promote a closer co-operation between its members and the members of the various Trades.
- To co-ordinate at the Provincial level the aims and objectives of its member associations.
- To co-operate with other branches of the construction industry in efforts to further fair and ethical business practices.
- To promote a program of apprenticeship training.
- To co-operate in developing the Provincial Industrial Safety Code and other technical and safety programs, having as their objective safe, adequate and efficient services to the public.
- To do all things as may directly or indirectly seem to be incidental, conductive, convenient or proper for the accomplishment of the purposes or the attainment of the objective of the Construction Association of New Brunswick or expedient for the protection or benefit of its members.
Composition
The Construction Association of New Brunswick Inc. is organized and structured as a federation of associations comprising:
- Moncton Northeast Construction Association

- Fredericton Northwest Construction Association
- Electrical Contractors Association of New Brunswick
- Mechanical Contractors Association of New Brunswick
- New Brunswick Roofing Contractors Association
- Masonry Industry Association of Atlantic Canada
- New Brunswick Merit Contractors Association
Operation
CANB is designed to perform a co-ordinating function in reaching consensus and effectively presenting the Industry's collective views to various stakeholders, with special focus given to provincial government departments and corporations. The Province of New Brunswick has long recognized CANB as the official and reputable voice of the industrial/commercial/institutional building sectors of the construction industry.
The degree to which CANB is able to attain its main goal is dependent upon the aspirations and the collective will of its member associations. The associations control the decision-making process and the direction of CANB's efforts through their respective representatives on the CANB Board of Directors.
CANB must attempt to ensure that any of its commitments, undertakings and/or actions are representative of the majority views and wishes of its member associations. This is necessary to satisfy the various regional and specialty constituency interests and is essential to CANB's continuing credibility.
CANB has worked hard to achieve its current status as the recognized voice of the industry, on matters of broad significance within our province. Its member associations help to strengthen this position of continued co-operation.
